Is Social Media Really That Bad Or Is It You?

Social media can have a bad reputation for all of the negativity it brings to light, but it can also be just as positive. For every bad comment, there are 10 good ones. For every gossip page, there are 20 pages dedicated to making you laugh and informing you on ways to make your life easier.
“With great power comes great responsibility.” While we may not be spiderman, we can still rise to the occasion and use social media for good. Below are a few ways you can use social in positive ways that won’t cause any stress, or cause you to worry about how many likes you did or did not receive.
1) Follow positive pages! “Positive” doesn’t always have to mean inspirational or motivational pages. It can mean following pages that make you laugh, or life-hacks. Just follow a few pages that are solely dedicated to putting out positive content. That way, you will inherently see more positivity throughout the day, and boom! You actually find yourself feeling good about what you are consuming instead of turning your face up at the sleazy rumors, trolling IG influencers, and everything else that makes you want to scroll past it as quickly as possible.
2) I’m sure I am not the only one, but I watch the news very sparingly. The reason being, the news can be very negative. There’s always someone dying, always something more terrible about COVID, and let’s not get started on politicians. I am not saying that because the news can be negative, we should ignore it all together. Instead, follow a news source you trust on social media. That way, you can still stay up-to-date on the news but you won’t find yourself constantly depressed by the repetitively negative news cycles on TV.
3) Half of the beauty of social media, is that you get to control what you see. Do some spring cleaning on your social media feeds and timelines. Unfollow some of those pages/people that only post about negative or unfriendly topics. Replace some of them with positive pages that will brighten up your timeline. It is a simple step that can actually make a difference. I’ve tried it myself. Although I may not have turned into the Dalai Lama, it definitely has brought some much-needed light & positivity to my timelines.
These are just a few tips on how you can use social media for good. It’s not all bad. It can be great for a laugh, great for learning some tips and tricks to incorporate into your life, and you can always find a good laugh. Just make sure you are focusing more on the good than the bad. Make your social media experience a positive one by limiting the amount of negativity you allow on your feeds.
